Library Advocacy

ProQuest Information and Learning has partnered with the library community since 1938. We are committed to the ongoing development of librarianship and advocating public support for libraries. We are proud to serve the library community since we share a central core value: a deep commitment to improving and expanding access to quality information.

We are actively involved in many activities devoted to supporting libraries and librarianship, including:

  • Lobbying -- ProQuest actively serves on the ALA Vendor Legislative Group. We visit and communicate with U.S. legislators regularly to request their support for federal library funding, which is key to ensuring ongoing access to information by many populations. In addition, we support local ALA chapters in state-level lobbying efforts.
  • ALA/ProQuest Scholarship Bash – ProQuest is the major sponsor of the annual ALA/ProQuest Scholarship Bash. Established in 2000, the annual event has raised more than $350,000 for ALA’s Spectrum scholarships, which support diversity in the library profession. ProQuest is a charter supporter of the event. In addition to raising much-needed funds for the scholarships, the event provides a fun event for librarians each year at the ALA Annual Conference. (The event was canceled in 2003 due to unusual circumstances. In lieu of the event, ProQuest donated $50,000 directly to the scholarship fund.)
  • Conference support – ProQuest participates in more than 150 conferences worldwide each year. Through sponsorships and exhibit participation, we support ongoing education and communication within the library community. For more information about our presence at library conferences, click here.

We encourage librarians and library users to join us in advocacy efforts. Here are some links you may find useful:
